2008/2009 our major charity recipient is Passages -
Culinary Arts Program. Funds will go
for the job training within Food Services Program, to provide sixteen women
with an intensive course of instruction in food service management.
Upon graduation from this program the expectation is for their employment
in the hotel management and banquet operations at some of the many hotels
and motels in Billings Montana. This program will
increase their job
readiness and potential earning power.
Since its inception in 1944, Soroptimists’ have
worked to identify community needs and to develop projects and raise funds
to meet those needs. The past
recipients of our support, to name a few include Family Tree, ZooMontana, Yellowstone River Parks Association, Yellowstone Art Museum, The Gateway House, and
several projects at the Montana State Women’s Prison. Many of these organizations rely on funds
raised by service clubs such as ours.
We are also the initiators of “Baby Think it Over!” a teen
pregnancy prevention program.
Soroptimists continue supporting education with Awards for: teens
through the Violet Richardson Award,
for women seeking to improve their economic status by gaining additional
training or college education through the Women’s Opportunity Award, and for women pursuing their post
graduate studies through the Fellowship
Award.
Soroptimists’ own Young Artists Program for high school students, which gives art
students a chance to have their work judged and displayed in a museum, with
the further opportunity to win monetary prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd. We also
include a $1000.00 scholarship award, to be applied towards higher
education.
